Tell us about your first act of resistance.

As a small child at school we had to stay on the path to walk to the playing fields, keeping off the grass. I wanted to know what would happen if I walked on the grass, so I did! I got told off and missed PE.

Yes

Have you ever been asked to do something you thought was morally wrong?

Yes

What happened?

Working as part of a mental health team, I was instructed to put several children on our very long internal waiting list, rather than allowing them to be seen sooner to prevent their condition from deteriorating. I left the job as I felt I couldn\'t morally continue as I had obeyed orders. One of my colleagues didn\'t, and snuck a few patients onto his waiting list. He was brave.

Have you ever obeyed an authority and then wished you had not?

Have you ever been asked to do something you thought was morally wrong?

Yes

What happened?

I was working in a very senior position in one of the largest multinational firms in the world. I was asked to report misleading data to the market. This was at the height of the dot com boom and the market was heavily overheated. This had already caused many casualties, one of them being my mother who had put all her savings into an overly inflated fund and eventually lost her entire savings. I felt extremely uncomfortable about presenting this information and delayed this while I sought legal advice. I was told by the company lawyers that it was not illegal to present misleading data as long as it was in a marketing context. (Note due to the damage caused it eventually became illegal to misinform the market in marketing documents as well as financial). I still felt extremely uncomfortable about doing this and ultimately refused. I was blackballed from the senior management team even though until then I was a top performer. I was eventually forced into redundancy and bullied throughout the process. The experience deeply affected me and for a long time I lost much of my confidence in the world. It revealed how inhumane people can become when power stakes were high - indeed \'power corrupts\' - and that large corporates breed the potential for this corruption. I vowed never to work for a large corporation again and I have kept my word to this date.

He used to tell us to move from where we were and we used to chat to him and ask why do we have to move that we were not doing any harm to anyone. Some times he would make us move by telling us we would be arrested and sometimes he would just let us sit there and tell us not to be noisy that there were people around us that wanted peace and quiet.
